About Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LMSU)

With 2 Academies, 7 Faculties and 4 Research Institutes, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LMSU) is the largest institution of higher education for biomedical sciences in Lithuania and of the best places to study medicine in Europe.

It was established in 2010 after the merger of the Kaunas University of Medicine (KMU) and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (LVA). LSMU's reputation quickly grew, and in 2019, it hosted 1142 international students from 71 countries. The University has practice bases in Israel, Germany, Sweden, Spain, the UK, and the USA. In addition, it has an increasing number of joint study programmes with numerous institutions across the world.

Apart from Medicine and Pharmacy in English, LMSU offers 14 other full degrees (bachelors or masters) taught in English, such as Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, etc.

Extracurricular and Leisure Activities

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences engages in both fundamental and applied research. There are four institutes that deal with specific scientific fields: neuroscience, endocrinology, cardiology, and animal science. Future doctors could learn a lot from participating in various research projects.

Study Medicine

Study period: 6 years
Tuition fees: €12,500 for years 1-4 and €13,000 for years 5-6

Study Dentistry

Study period: 5 years
Tuition fees: €13,500 for years 1-4 and €14,000 for year 5

Study Pharmacy

Study period: 5 years
Tuition fees: €5,600 per year

Study Veterinary

Study period: 6 years
Tuition fees: €8,000 for years 1-3, 9200 for year 4, and €10,000 for years 5-6

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Admission & Entry Requirements

Apart from the required application documents, a university entrance exam is required except for the following cases:

• The applicant submits Score Reports for SAT Subject Tests in Chemistry and Biology. If your score is 550 or above, you could be exempted from the entrance examination of LSMU.
• The applicant has successfully pursued studies in the biomedical field at any other accredited university and was awarded a Bachelor's Degree
• A Levels‘  Certificate with grades A, A or A, B;
• IB Diploma with grades 5 – 7

Accommodation

If you are a first-year student, you can choose between the university dorms (located on campus), student residence halls in either Kaunas old town or the city centre, and renting an apartment on your own. The LSMU dorms' prices range between €75 and €200 per month, depending on the room type. Beware of the opening and closing dates of application for student housing. The sooner you apply, the better the options for accommodation are.

Transport

The buses in Kaunas are either trolleybuses or regular buses. They cost 0,5 euros for a student. Taxis are a fast and cheap way to move around town, especially when dark or rainy. Taxis in Kaunas are cheap when using the Bolt app. If you want to travel outside Kaunas, you can reach other cities in Lithuania by train or bus. All The trains depart from Kaunas train station (Kauno geležinkelio stotis). The price of tickets varies depending on where you go, but there is a 50% student discount.

Life as a Medical Student in Kaunas, Lithuania

According to legend, Kaunas was established by Romans, during Nero’s reign. Palemon, a Roman patrician, fled the empire with his three sons and a royal retinue. One of the sons, Kunas, built a fortress at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. The town that grew next to it was named after him - Kaunas.

Today, the city has over 300,000 people, and thanks to the many higher education institutions, there are over 50,000 students. That’s why Kaunas is also known as the City of Students.

Naturally, there are numerous attractions suitable for young people. Several annual music festivals take place here, including Kaunas Jazz Festival, Pazaislis Music Festival, and the International Modern Dance Festival.

In addition, the city is very green, full of parks, gardens, and nature reserves. Azuolynas, for example, is an oak grove full of trees ranging in age from 100 to 300 years. The park is the largest urban stand of mature oaks, and it’s a popular recreational area.
