Life as a Medical Student in Iasi, Romania

Iasi was once the capital of Moldavia, and the city still boasts the appropriate sophistication. After all, once Wallachia and Moldavia merged into Romania, Bucharest was chosen as the capital of the new country by a very close vote.

In retrospect, Iasi has preserved much of its authentic spirit and does not feel like another bustling European metropolis. There is even an aristocratic aura about the city, and it is evident in the architecture of the Old Town and the public buildings.

Even the parks in the city feel like palace gardens, and it’s a fair assessment since some of them were built by Prince Mihail Sturdza in the 19th century. The Botanical Garden of Iasi was also founded in the 1800s, and it has amassed over 10,000 species over the years.

Iasi is also famous for its spiritual role in the region. The relics of Saint Parascheva were brought to the local Trei Ierarhi Monastery in 1641, and in 1888 they were moved to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Iasi. Each October, thousands of pilgrims gather to commemorate the Saint, and they visit religious sites both within and around the city.

Term Dates

The academic year begins on the 30th of September. 1st semester is 14 weeks long and ends on the 17th of January, immediately followed by the winter exam session, which is 21 days.

The summer semester is 15 weeks long and starts on the 17th of February and ends on the 29th of May. Exam session number 2 is throughout June.
